No, this is not a justification for N+1. The Brain, just like Muscles, follows the natural law of use it or loose it.
Brain & Muscle connection.
Every muscles in our body is connected to the brain through neural pathways providing signaling for muscle activation and relaxation. Therefore, exercising the muscles exercises the brain too. Physical activities that exercises diverse muscle groups and coordination activates these neural pathways, in turn exercises the brain.
Riding multiple bikes here does not means multiple of the same type of bike but different types of bikes. Different types of bike have different geometry and handling characteristics. This requires the use and coordination of different muscle groups.
Ever have the experience when you switch to a different bike that you feels like learning to cycle again and takes some time to get used to ? This is the workings of muscle memory. Riding the same bike regularly for more than a week and you will feel comfortable and settled in. When this sets in, the muscle memory goes into autonomous mode. This is also when the brain becomes lazy getting into a routine. Repeating these routine only reinforce these specific pathways but ignores the rest. In the longer term, those unused pathways will degenerates.
Having different bike and switching them every week or 2 will cause the brain to rewires and activates different pathways. It may sound trivial but the actual effects has a much broader benefit to the health of the brain. Diversity is the key here rather than repetition.
Not restricted to riding multiple bikes. The same applies to taking a new route, trying a new style of cycling or picking up a new skill. More on this in the topic on “The Spirit of Adventure”.
This is only one part on “Use It or Loose It” to mental health, the greater part lies in nutrition that nourishes and fuels the brain and lifestyle factors that reduces toxicity.
Life at its best, is a harmonious dance with this grand symphony or a storm in the Ocean depending on our choice of thought, actions and believes.
