Latvia Cycling Adventure

Tugged in a little corner of the Baltic Sea, this country has just 100 years of history as an independent country being part of the European Union. Its history, however, goes back many hundreds years as part of Russia. There are still many remnants of artifacts and cultures from its Russian regime.

The first thing that surprised me was its extensive public wifi network ! You can access it from anywhere and it’s free. Something I never expected. Another thing about this country is it’s clean and very well organized compared to many bigger European cities.

Unknown compared to countires like Holland, cycling is a big thing here. Cycling infrastructures are good and many cycle commutes here.

The cycling routes take you through forested areas peppered with small communities along the way. It brings you to beautiful beaches along the Baltic Sea with beautiful parks, restaurants and theaters. Music and dance performance is a big part of the culture here.

I was here when the country celebrated its 100 years of independence with performers dressed in different traditional dressing parading the streets while their traditional cuisines were showcased around their parks. It was such a big and happening carnival with everyone out and participating like a huge picnic.

Heading inland, you get to National Parks and the old castles where they fought their battles. Some have been conserved as a park where performance will be held during the weekends and people will come to picnic and perform. Life is beautiful here.
