1000 Km Fixed Gear

Attempting 1000km unsupported ride on Fixed with 50×17 gear ratio on 26×1.5” tyres giving about 73 gear inch.

This ride was done on No Carbs for the entire 9 days in the spirit to find out if Carbs is really neccessary and also how little does the body need for this level of endurance activity.

Typical food in a day are 2 eggs and a coffee with an additional piece of chicken occasionally for the morning and lots of vegetables, 2 eggs and some meat at the end of the day.

Daily water during the ride are typically 2 water bottles plus an additional 1.5L mineral water and 1 or 2 glasses of iced tea at rest stop. Post ride, we will hydrate fully at the end of each day. Himalaya pink salt added to the water as neccessary to replenish electrolytes.

Energy level was good for all the hard climbs even without any food intake. Didn’t feel hungry or the need to eat during the ride. Recovery was fast after a climb. That, allows consecutive climbs without feeling drained at the end of the days ride even when done on a Fixed Gear that requires all out efforts for those climbs above 9% grade.

Heat management was also good. Body was cooler, sweating less even under full Sun which reduces the need for water during the ride.

Ride concluded at 1118Km door to door. Average speed was 0.3kph slower than on a multi geared bike due to much lower speed going down slopes.
